Can I record video too?
Yes. Include video of a screen or window alongside the audio, or keep it audio-only. Your recording and transcript stay together.
Is it really free?
Yes. Recording, transcription and your own notes are free. No subscription or paid tier. Optional external AI services may charge their own fees.
Are there any usage limits?
No monthly minutes or transcription credits. Record and transcribe as often as you need; recordings use your Mac’s available storage.
Do I need an account?
No Sotto account is needed. Install the app and download the speech models to get started.
Does my audio leave my Mac?
Recording and transcription happen locally. Your audio does not need to be sent to a cloud AI provider. If you choose to use an external AI tool or upload to your own cloud storage, the information you share is handled by that service.
Does it work with online meetings?
Yes. It records your microphone and meeting-app audio on your Mac, without a bot joining the call.
What permissions does it need?
Microphone access for your voice, and the macOS audio-recording permission for meeting-app audio. Capturing a screen or window needs Screen Recording permission too.
Are the notes generated by AI?
Your notes are yours to write. You can choose to connect an external AI tool; anything you send to it follows that service’s privacy rules.
Can I use it away from the internet?
Yes. Download the speech models once, then record and transcribe offline. External AI services and uploads to your own cloud storage are entirely optional. They need a connection only if you choose to use them.
